The AMA has produced a position statement on obesity. It outlines the scope of the problem and the need for a whole of society aproach ( government and non government organisations, health and food industries, media, employers, schools and community organisations) to combat it. Physical activity and nutritional measures, targeted interventions, community based programs, research and monitoring, and treatment and management are needed.

The relationship between food additves and behaviour is controversial. A new study has provided evidence for increased hyperactive behaviour in children aged 3 years and 8/9 years when given a mix food colourings and the preservative sodium benzoate.

Formula Manufacturers have raised concerns over the WHO's recent guideline that recommends that the powdered formula be added to boiled water cooled to no less than 70°C.

The Kids Eat Kids Play survey, undertaken in 2006/7 is the first national survey of Australian childrens food and nutrient intakes since 1995 and physical activity patterns since 1985. It is being conducted by CSIRO with funding from the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing, Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and the Australian Food and Grocery Council. Results are expected to be released soon.

A recent study looking at the rates of breast feeding initiation and duration in Australia over the last 10 years (1995-2004/5) has found that while overall rates have stayed the same, they are lower in lower socioeconomic than higher socioeconomic groups. In other words, disadvantaged families are less likely to breast feed.
