Heinz Post- Doctoral Fellow at QUT

Hienz is proud to announce our sponsorship of this important position at Queensland Institute of Technology (QUT), to support research into early feeding practices including the NOURISH study. NH&MRC funded, NOURISH  is one of the first and largest studies providing detailed longitudinal information on early feeding practices, both internationally and in Australia. It will provide valuable insights into the impact of early childhood feeding behaviour on food preferences and eating patters in later life. The $355,000 sponsorship for 4 years is a major commitment by Heinz towards improving children's healthy eating.

The NOURISH study, co-ordinated by Professor Lynne Daniels at QUT and Professor Anthea Magarey at Flinders University in South Australia, aims to investigate whether a targeted educational program can improve early feeding practices, such as:-

  • Reduce infant/child preferences for and intake of non-core (low nutrient, energy dense) foods

  • Increase infant/child preferences for and intake of fruit and vegetables

  • Assist mothers to recognise and support their babies self regulation of food intake

  • Increase mothers satisfaction and confidence with respect to feeding their child

Dissapointed

This is a great study with a great doctoral team researching it. How ever I believe that the money donated by Heinz is not being used effectively. It is a common occurrence the PHD Students research not only overlaps, but is duplicated. This does not sometimes become apparent until 18 months into their study. Then the students pretty much have to start over. This is primarily caused by the co-ordinator Professor Lynne Daniels. She does not supervise the students to the level that is needed and frequently misses meetings. The nourish project could be run far more efficiently under a different co-ordinator
