Iodine supplementation for pregnant and breastfeeding women

The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) has released a public statement recommending that women planning a pregnancy, who are already pregnant or who are breast feeding take a 150ug  supplement of iodine daily.

For those with pre-existing thryoid conditions, discussion with a doctor is recommended before taking the supplement. The full public statement is available at http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/publications/synopses/new45_syn.htm
