Coeliac Awareness Week
Coeliac Awareness Week is being held this year from the 13th -20th March. A free information pack containing facts about the disease, its diagnosis and treatment, along with recipes is available to hand out to clients.
Coeliac disease affects about 1 in 100 Australians. Those with coeliac disease have an immune reaction to gluten, the protein found in wheat, rye, barley and oats. Diagnosis and treatment is important as untreated it can result in failure to thrive and poor growth in infants and children, iron deficiency anaemia, behavioural and mental problems, bone and joint pains, fatigue, infertility and other gastroinestinal conditions. Treatment involves following a gluten free diet for life.
